Certificate of Occupancy Requirements

CERTIFICATE OF OCCUPANCY

The International Building Code, Section 111, prescribes the requirements for issuing the Certificate of Occupancy. Before the usage or occupancy of any new building, occupiable structure or existing occupiable building or structure alteration (remodeling) or change of occupancy in an existing structure or building or space, the Building Official must issue a Certificate of Occupancy. Certain mechanical, electrical and other work which requires a permit (See IBC 105), may not be required to obtain a Certificate of Occupancy. Such work, as determined by the Building Official, shall require a final inspection for code compliance only prior to usage or occupancy.
