V. Randall Turpin Building

The V. Randall Turpin University Services Building at The University of Utah attained LEED® GOLD certification - LEED for Commercial Interiors: v.2.0.

The LEED green building certification program is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of green buildings.

The V. Randall Turpin Building renovated space houses Campus Design, Facilities Management and Campus Construction — the departments that administer on-Campus construction, including all LEED® projects. The Turpin Building renovation was sequenced in eight phases over two years to allow continuous occupancy by all personnel throughout construction. All essential 'prerequisites' were met.

The project took advantage of superior location near diverse community activities/services, and access to public transportation. It avoided adding any new parking, provided more than adequate secure bicycle storage, and provided change/shower facilities for bike commuters.

ENERGY

Energy systems were improved where possible, without changing mechanical systems extensively. Lighting controls were linked to introduced skylights. Systems were enhanced commissioned to assure expected performance. 'Green power' from wind was purchased for two years by employee contributions. Solar panels were added on the roof, not for LEED credit, but to offset electrical demand of the renovated area.

MATERIALS

Materials conservation was deliberately linked with construction economy. Campus Construction work crews were able to conserve resources to an extreme degree, 73%, minimizing demolition, and rebuilding & reusing materials.

Finish materials, such as carpeting, doors& frames, glazing and hardware were reused within the project. More than 1/3 of furniture & furnishings were reused from other projects on campus. More than 44% of materials cost, including reused furnishings, were sourced from other Campus projects within 1 mile, well within the 500-mile radius for 'regional' materials.

INTERIORS

Extreme care was exercised to protect HVAC systems and ductwork from dust or contamination, preserving indoor air quality (IAQ). All materials choices were screened to minimize emissions of VOCs, formaldehyde and other toxic airborne compounds. All adhesives, sealants, paints, coatings, carpet systems, composite wood and laminate adhesives were carefully selected.

Interior working environments were enhanced by individual lighting controls, and by addition of tubular skylights for natural light.

RECOGNITION

The project was awarded 'exemplary performance' and 'innovation' extra credits for resource reuse, regional sourcing, green power, educational program, and participation of a LEED-Accredited Professional.
